Prevention Tips

Archie's Final Project has reached teens and young adults across the world for its message and for the ability to let peole know they are not alone. We felt it only fitting to put on our site, some tips for the prevention of suicide written by the National Association for Suicide Prevention.

    1. Know the warning signs! Threats, Depression, Efforts to hurt oneself, Changes in physical habits and appearance, Sudden changes in personality, friends or behaviors.
    2. Do not be afraid to talk to your friends. Listen to their feelings. Make sure they know how important they are to you, but don't believe you can keep them from hurting themselves on your own. Preventing suicide will require adult help.
    3. Make no deals. Never keep secret a friend's suicidal plans or thoughts. You cannot promise that you will not tell-you have to tell to save your friend!
    4. Tell an adult. Talk to your parent, your friend's parent, your school's psychologist or counselor-- a trusted adult. And don't wait! Don't be afraid that the adults will not believe you or take you seriously-keep talking until they listen! Even if you are not sure your friend is suicidal, talk to someone. It's OK if you "jump the gun"-this is definitely the time to be safe and not sorry!
    5. Ask if your school has a crisis team. Many schools (elementary, middle and high schools) have organized crisis teams, which include teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists and principals. These teams help train all staff to recognize warning signs of suicide as well as how to help in a crisis situation. These teams can also help students understand warning signs of violence and suicide. If your school does not have a crisis team, ask your Student Council or faculty advisor to look into starting a team.

Testimonials

I am in tears as I write, here. You have done a great thing, David. Thank you for sending this letter to me & thank you for letting me be a part of MS. I have never been part of something that has meant so much to myself & others. I would trade every film I have ever been part of for this one experience. Drugs, alcohol, women, therapy or any other device or vice has done little to dull the pain or chase out the demons of my brother's suicide. Being part of My Suicide has put it to rest. You have saved my life, too. I love you."

Hello David, My name is Logan and I got chance to be a volunteer at the Calgary International Film Festival and got a chance to watch your film My Suicide and even got a chance to shake your hand at the black night gala later the night was great but even so i was still emotionally moved and in state of shock as that night moved along that i couldn't watch another film do to that my mind was trying to send a message to body to keep moving and wake up next day and day after that. In saying that i been really depressed this past year from dropping out film school and then coming home and not being able to find a new creative passion and the thinking about suicide a lot these days and searching for something new. I really related to the character of Archibald and in saying that your movie made me live another day and im looking forward to watching your film again and again and i wish you best of luck with your work in future and seeing your next film. Thank you David. Thank you for your film saving my life. Thank You.

This movie changed my life. i was a suicidal teenager when i saw this movie. sure that this would give me the nerve to end it all. so i bought tickets to the newport beach film festival, to go see the movie. instead of getting the nerve to kill myself, this movie proved to me how much it would crush those who loved me. i was purely focusing on how hurt the people i hated would be instead of how hurt my loved ones would be. I would love this movie to go to theatres nationwide, so i could bring my friends to a movie that changed my life. a movie that mattered. please email me or call me at *********. i would really love to talk to you on the phone to the director and maybe even Gabriel on the phone, and ask some questions. Thank you for saving my life, I realize now that its a beautiful thing, and its not to be wasted. I raised my grades and quit smoking. This movie turned my whole life around.

We of course responded, personally and with Teen Line to make sure he was getting help...and since then, the family is putting screenings together to help others... here's the Mom's response, right after we first made contact back to AJ...

You will never know what your phone call to my son, AJ meant to him. He hasn't stopped talking about yet! He's printing out flyers about the next screening at The Skirball and I told him that I would drive as many friends as I could. I looked at Regenerate's site and was blown away. Sarah Miller's film "Namaste" was especially stirring."

AJ is very interested in joining the teen online group and whatever other groups he can.

I'll never be able to truly thank you enough for what you and everyone involved in the movie, "My Suicide" have done for AJ and our whole family. On the outside, AJ looks like the poster boy for a successful, happy teen. He's gorgeous,a 6'3" volleyball player and funny. The past few months have been very challenging in that AJ slipped into a severe depression over several events. We've spent thousands on therapists, psychiatrists and many hours of family discussion over how AJ's threats to commit suicide would end our lives ... as well. I was grasping at straws when I saw the article in the paper about your movie being part of Newport's film festival and made it a mandatory family event. AJ feels almost as though he has a new purpose in life and that is to have as many peers view this movie so they can see they're not alone. If this ... gives him a fresh perspective and motivation to do something for other teens in our area, I'll feel like maybe I can exhale a bit. Endless Thanks."

"My Suicide was by far the craziest movie ever…and I say that is in a good way. The characters encounter events and problems so real that every teenager can relate to them. I really believe this movie will help parents understand teenagers and inspire teenagers who experience the same problems/feelings. It was really a masterpiece!"

"In all my years working in the field of suicide prevention, My Suicide the most exciting film concept I've ever seen."

"Dear Mr. Miller, I want to finally thank you for the screening copy of My Suicide. We invited several members of our staff as well as professionals from a few local youth agencies to preview the film in our office, and the response was unanimous - this is a powerful film that realistically and compellingly depicts the scope of adolescent issues today."

"Anything that opens dialogue and invites conversation about suicide and depression is vitally important to our youth. It is the lack of conversation and communication that creates isolation and can be deadly. My Suicide gets everyone talking and reaching far beyond casual conversation."

    Renowned Suicide Prevention Expert

"I was tremendously moved by My Suicide and, most importantly, so were our teens. We all thought that this was a very accurate portrayal of adolescent angst and alienation. It clearly showed how depression in this age group is manifested and, if untreated, can lead to suicidal thoughts and even to suicide. I heartily recommend this movie for teen audiences and their parents- it resonates with the images, the music, the worries, concerns, and the helplessness many teens feel when overwhelmed by feelings of unhappiness and even despair. Despite the topic, this is not a downer so I recommend it heartily. Go see it!"

Executive Director, TEEN LINE, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

"My Suicide is edgy, dark, and at times, bitingly funny. But ultimately it's all about a teenager with the courage to expose life's hypocrisy. It's also a slap to the face to anyone who thinks we should not discuss suicide openly and frankly."

"What a powerful film with an even more powerful message. The impact is undeniable."

"A friend of mine who is a therapist shared that she had received a message on her office answering machine from a client about a film her parents had just seen. The client, a 23-year-old woman, had been trying for years to talk with her parents about what was happening inside her... She had suicidal feelings, felt alone... needed to feel understood & loved. ... The therapist knew how the parents pretended everything was ok even when their daughter tried to talk with them about the deep pain inside her. The client continued recording… although she was working and couldn't see this film...the parents had gone. The client breathlessly shared that for the last 10 days all her parents could do was engage her and reach into her pain with a loving hand. This film had changed their lives.... Had she seen it? ... It is called MY SUICIDE?
I was approached last week by a friend, a good man, who had seen MY SUICIDE. He was blown away by the film and wants to do the right thing as a parent. What is the right thing he asked...he then shared that his 14-year-old son was enjoying the bliss of first love and it came to a sudden end after 2 weeks when she broke up with him. Our friend asked his son how he was doing after the break-up and his son smiled and said "fine"....Now having just seen MY SUICIDE ... the father then shared with his child..."When I lost my first love it broke my heart"... the boy began to cry and the conversation began......Aloha"

Hollywood

"As a director watching My Suicide, I'm fascinated and delighted by the unusually creative and innovative technique of these filmmakers in service of a beautiful screenplay and wonderful performances. As the father of teenage sons, I'm deeply touched by the anguish of the protagonists and the terrible pain of growing up alone and lonely in a society that seems increasingly complicated and dangerous for our adolescent children. It's a movie for parents to watch with their kids and an opportunity for all of us to redeem our shared grief."

    Harold Ramis
Writer-Director, Ground Hog's Day, Ghostbusters, Animal House

"My Suicide really opened my eyes to suicide in a way I found terribly unexpected. By the end of this film it's clear how difficult this world is and how we need to come together to bring awareness to the subjects of depression and mental illness -- those things that we don't want to talk about in our families. We can save people's lives by doing it. This is an amazing, amazing film and I think it's very important that everyone sees it."

    Mariel Hemingway
    Actor, Granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway

"My Suicide is a modern day 'Catcher in the Rye,' speaking for today's generation in its storytelling, tone, honesty, humor, self-reflection and social commentary. It is audacious and entertaining while offering direction, comfort and solutions. Blending animation and live action, heart, humor and music, it delivers a fabulous film experience."
